Vendor Spotlight / Choosing Ceremony Music {with Rivery City String Quartet}
I am a huge fan of live music at the wedding ceremony! Whether it’s a talented singer or a string quartet playing beautiful melodies, it just adds something extra-special to the most important part of your wedding day.
I asked local musician & lead violinist of the River City String Quartet, Kristen Jones, what she typically plays at wedding ceremonies and this is what she shared with me.
“Back in the day, it used to be always the classics - Canon in D for the bridal party coming down, the 'Here Comes the Bride' and the recessional afterwards. But I'd say the last decade, trends have been changing towards more customized music. For example, I have a wedding coming up where the bride wants 'Marry You' by Bruno Mars, Elvis’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and 'Home' by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
We did a completely (awesomely) nerdy wedding a few years back that had the Death March from Star Wars as the grooms entrance. Each wedding is so different, but in general we play from a list of music that we have permanently on hand at all times, and offer custom music for an extra cost, especially if I have to write it myself. The usual suspects for 'custom' songs are candle lighting, bride’s entrance, and the party leaving, although there is no limit to when or how many songs we offer custom.”
I must admit, I really love the custom music selections! It’s just one more way to tell your love story and share about who you are as people. I remember playing Louis Armstrong’s ‘Wonderful World’ at my ceremony and so many people STILL connect it with our wedding day… I love that!
